University of Sunderland & Joseph Rowntree Foundation: Certificate in Care
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation's Certificate in Care course has been developed to bridge the gap between health and social care training . It examines the diversity and complexities of the needs of children and adults requiring care, whether in residential homes, nursing homes or group care settings. The aim is to equip carers with the skills and knowledge necessary to enable those being cared for to meet their full portential.
This course is ideal for students currently working as unqualified managers, senior carers and care assistants within a variety of group care settings.
The course consists of four Core Modules and two Option Modules.

- (Double module) Effective Learning, followed by Diversity & Culture
- Social Context of Caring
- Psychological Context of Caring
- Lifespan Development
Option Modules
- Caring for Older People
- Caring for People with a Learning Disability
- Caring at Home
- Healthcare Management
- Children in Residential Schools
This degree course is offered through the University of Sunderland's external programme which provides the opportunity for flexible study. Material is provided by the University of Sunderland, while tuition and support is provided by the GTCE.
Students taking this course must be enrolled as external students by the supervising University as well as by the GTCE. Students whose mother tongue is not English will require IELTS Academic 5.5 or higher to proceed with their chosen course. GTCE London will provide IELTS tuition prior to the commencement of the degree course.
